Zeroing in on health care (By Candice Miller)

This afternoon I had a weekly lunch meeting with a number of my Republican colleagues who belong to the Tuesday Group. The Tuesday Group includes a number of moderate Republican members who seek commonsense solutions to the challenges that face our nation and try to build bipartisan consensus to meet those challenges.

The main topic of our discussion today was how we address health care in the federal government. Since the election last fall, we have seen the debate begin to ramp up about solutions for the growing number of uninsured in our nation. We discussed this issue at length and we will be putting forward solutions at some point that meet five basic criteria.
-- One, we will advocate for universal access to quality health care that people can afford.
-- Two, we will protect against forcing people into a government-run system.
-- Three, we will build a system that will allow those who like the coverage they have to keep that coverage.
-- Four, we will ensure that medical decisions are made between doctors and patients and not dictated by Washington bureaucrats.
-- And five, any system must include provisions for wellness care and quality disease management for chronic conditions.
